46wdx repower quest. (again)

my wife said she would drive my power wagon if it had an auto tranny. would a late model auto fit between the 318 and the divorced transfer case and still have room for the driveshaft. if so which model tranny would be best? i plan on hauling some heavy loads on occasion. i could use a hydraulic motor to power the front winch. i don't hear much talk about this type of conversion so there must be a reason. any advice would be helpful . thanks, jim.
