np435 np540 input shaft

I am trying to put a np540 trans with a 360 in my 54 pw. My problem is that the input shaft is 3/4 of an inch to long. Can i use the input shaft of a np435 in the np540. The np540 is a five speed and has a PTO port on the left side for a winch. The np435 only has a PTO port on the right side and it is a four speed. I will use the np435 if i can't figer out the five speed.
