You have to understand the Military heritage the PW was based on and that is the ¾ ton MV truck. The PW uses Military drive train and we all know speed was not a requirement of trucks that have the capability of carrying 3,000 plus pounds of cargo or personnel over rough terrain. Just watch the History channel on Sundays to get an idea of the operating conditions expected for these trucks. When they were adopted for civilian use, due to there ruggedness, they were marketed as a work truck, again speed was not a factor. As far as ratio options there are two:
The standard 9-5/8 inch differential will accept only 4.89 or 5.83. You switch out your 9-5/8ths differential and carrier for an 8-3/4 from an MV ½ ton that will require some modification to fit your present axle housing. This will allow ratios from 4.10 to 4.89 and should give you plenty of speed, but will be a weaker differential assembly in your truck.
