Thats the problem, been dealing with this for years.I got a couple of small brown lips, but the problem you can't fit them in the drive train. No matter how you do it,you have a very long front drive line.
I will say, i have a three speed brown lip in my 68 D300,12 forward speeds and three reverse. It's my only truck and i can actualy drive it on the freeway without fear of being shot at, Kalifornia you know!
I was going to go the route of the three speed, after some research compairing the three speed with the brown lip.
Pros of the brown lip. slide shifter-easy mounting-straight cut gears-very rugged-easy to overhaul
cons of brown lip- if you can find one it's problably direct-20%under-40& under.Very expensive.Hard to find the direct 20% over and 20% under.NOISY
Pros of the three speed cheap/easy to find if David can post a picture you will see how easy it is to modify.Cheaper to overhaul than a Brown lip.Meashed gears.
Cons Meashed gears turning in revearse can put loads in the opposite direction of the thrust line.I've heard this is only a factor with the leadfoot crowd.Mounting is more difficult, takes a little more time with the tape measure is all.
Soory for the long post. This subject is close to me as i have never had a new vehicle, and have been messing with trying to gear up old trucks going on 25 years now.
Three speeds,brown lips,manure spreader gear boxes,anything that turns diff,speeds.
5 speed trannys?? 70ish and back with an o.d.never found one.Heard of em,never seen one. It's like trying to find the Holy grail. My 53 FFPW i am restoring is the end of the line for me,i will save until i can afford one of those clark 5 speed no matter how long it takes.
I appologize for taking up bandwith,i will not post on the remainder of forum 149 as too alow others the previlige, thanks Lucian
