LED's are a 'Light Emitting Diode'. A diode allows voltage in one direction, but blocks it in the reverse direction in a circuit.
As their main function is to act as a switch of sorts they will operate on any voltage up to their rated voltage. Any higher and their blocking ability is overcome.
They will obviously give a dimmer light on 6 volt than 12 volt, but being as they are far brighter than an ordinary 12 volt they might look just fine, and far better than a normal 6 volt I would think.
