Can you run an air compressor backward?

I'm thinking about mounting the compressor over the left side of the engine and putting a v-belt pulley in the middle of the winch driveshaft. I'll run a belt up to the compressor to run it only when the PTO is engaged.

I'll have to remove the splash pan. Even then, there probably won't be room for the belt to run, but it's fun to plan.

It wouldn't matter if the PTO was running forward or reverse would it?
