I've run across a few army applications where I've seen dual fronts.
The secret is to have the outer front tyres worn and scrubbed down to nothing, so they have a smaller rolling radius and dont contact the ground at all in 'normal' use.
I'm sure you could have pair of 1/2 ton WC wheels and tyres as your 'outer' fronts. That way you would have the floatation almost instantly in mud, but your normal driving would be unaffected.
