At the risk of taking something away from our significant others, a dog is the single most loyal and affectionate companion we can ever have in our life. We can do no wrong, they love us as just as we are, always, and ask for absolutely nothing in return, only the privilege of our company.
Every dog I have lost has been a soul wrenching trauma. We shall never be the same after the loss of a faithful pet, and yet we carry them with us always in our hearts.
This may seem corny to you just now, but Leo Buscaglia wrote a book called Freddy the Leaf. It is an essay on death, oriented toward human death. Freddy the leaf came as a new leaf, lived his life of growth, and flamed into brilliance in the fall of his life. He fluttered to the forest floor as all leaves do, as part of the cycle of life.
I mean in no way to trivialize the life of any animal to which we have become deeply attached. What I take from this is that your dog, my dog, any dog that anyone loves, comes into our life and we enjoy then as long as we can, and then they come to the end of their time. Later, a new dog is added to our life, not to replace the previous, grand animal we loved, but to join him or her in our life, to make it bigger, fuller, longer, better.
Celebrate the life of your beloved dog, think of him often, and be open to life, just as he was to you. I can’t write anymore.
