As far as the strength of race parts go, notice the next Indy 500- 30 cars start, only half of them even make 500 miles.
The GM 350 diesel of the 80's was based on the Oldsmobile block, heavier and stronger than the small block chevy, and many didn't last out thier leases. Leaseholders really got shafted by the 'light weight diesel' idea. GN's next idea was the 6.2l. It seems better, but weighs 200# more than a chevy small block. They've even gone to a turbo on the 6.5l version. Some owners claim 300,000 lifespans, some curse them....I'm driving a Blazer M1009, 5,300# and 20 mpg, 6.2l na...and I have a core motor that can be shoehorned into my 53 FF....
mmmm...20mpg...mmmm.....
