Power Wagon E brake

I bought a NOS brake band on ebay recently and will be installing it shortly. Just curious, when the band brake is properly set up, will it really grab and hold or just sorta hold? I only have experience with old worn and oil soaked bands which will hold fine on the flat and not much else.
