I think Willy hit it on the head. We're talking something that at the youngest would be is a 1968. So on average if it is 40 years old, the guy hasn't worked on one in a while. He has to factor in some unexpected expense. Say one of the manifolds cracks or is cracked or how about a bad nut/stud that won't come out/breaks/rounds off. As we all know, things like this happen.
This would be one reason I have heard of people taking certain tasks to a shop because they get an estimate and the shop will deal with any **natural occurences**
example, exhaust work I will take to a shop as long as it is behind the exhaust manifold or header. putting in a new muffler for a muffler shop is a walk in the park for them and a pia for someone like me. I haven't done one in a while and I have a lot more tools in my garage but I don't know that I would tackle a partial remove/replace.
