You need to step down a bit.
I think Mike was just trying to use his life experience to save people (like you) arms, legs, and lives. It's ok to attempt a dangerous process using homemade tools and no experience IF you realize the risk. Now, since you know, go ahead and change out that split rim. Just try to do it when no one else is close. You will probably do just fine, probably.
If you do it ok, you will have changed a tire, and if you do it wrong, the Darwin awards are still being compiled for this year.
Some jobs are dangerous even if you are a professional and should know better. I saw a lathe operator who used to have long hair.
I thank Mike for his continuing effort to educate the rest of us tire novices and keep us around to post to this forum.
