Hi Norm,
My Wife and I lived in San Francisco in the early 80s. We came home to Vt for Christmas one year and thought it would be nice to bring our maple challenged friends back some maple syrup. They were all thrilled to receive it. After awhile we started asking people how they liked it and most of them sheepishly admitted it was too strong, they had to cut it 50 50 with aunt jemima "syrup". So, in response to your post, no, I dont think Californians have taste buds!
