Seems that in the dark recesses of my mind (there's lot of them!) I remember my auto shop teacher saying they went to neg ground to prevent body rust out. I just stripped out my 53, and found no body ground on it. The worst rust is near the body mounts- makes me wonder about rust and grounding through the mounts? Anyhown there must have been a good reason to make the change in the 50's, it would have been as confusing as the change to metric in the 80's. I know that steel hulled boats have an electric system that charges the hull to prevent disolution in salt water- don't know it's polarity though.
But to make the change, just reverse the wires on the ampmeter, the battery, and re-polarize the regulator- Viola! negative ground!....and, like chicken soup, adding a couple body grounds couldn't hoit.
