Some 230 engines have rear main seals, for example the one I had in my 1951 M37, which cannot be replaced without dropping the transmission because there is a bolt which holds the upper half of the seal in place and which cannot be accessed without pulling the transmission and clutch assemblies. This seal is bonded to a metal plate so that rotating the old upper seal out of its seat (and then the new one in) is not possible. Buyers beware!
