Arthur, They are two different ratios.
They actually used to run the 4.89's in the front & 4.88's in the rear on some 4x4's to take up the slack in the gears but I'm not really familiar with which model trucks that did this. This was why it became a no-no to drive on dry pavement with 4x4 engaged.
Someone here I'm sure can shed more & better light on this.
