What the others have said works well but if you are going to throw away one side anyway here is what I do. On the throw away side of the 2 pieces I carefully grind the weld with a small angle grinder till you just break thru (or real close) to the side you want to save. Once all the welds are ground make your end cuts, easiest with a small cut off diew grinder. You can then, normally, peel the piece out with a chisel, All this is providing you can get to the welds on the bad side. I do this when transferring bed pockets and it saves the hassle of going back and welding all the holes back up. Not a big deal if your going to MIG it back but I've got a spot welder.
