Hi Tim,
If your have a whirling clutch, chances are your throwout bearing is close enough to still be in contact with the pressure plate and not actually "letting go", causing the bearing to turn all of the time. That is bad! The bearing is designed to only rotate during shifts, so yes, give it a little more room. (I'm assuminmg that the whirling goes away during the actual shift, when in full contact with the disc?)
