I have a 77'M886 that was down for most of the summer a couple years back due to the dumbest simplest mistake one could make, The timing chain was on its last legs , (wouldnt time to spec) I replaced the original distributor, ballast resistor (those only go back in one way lol, & thats a whole nother story). Thinking that it had to be my original distributor pickup to be the culprit, I went down Murrys & traded my old one for a new one built for a 318 (they gave me what the computer called for)well , after messing with that , & getting the ballast resistor wired correctly ,low n behold it ran(damn thing still wouldnt time)& was spark knocking badly, after 6 mo.s of aggrevation , I ordered NOS distributor from one of the surplus houses & what do you know it worked great , & timed right to spec. Sorry for the long post....Moral of the story , dont let an inexperienced counter person at a major parts chain sell you the wrong part (the distributor had the wrong advance weight in it , it was tuned for a 318 car).
