Zinc Coating

Does anyone know anything about when you strip a car body down. Supposedly if you strip it to bare metal and spray/dip it in some sort of zinc coating. Then prime the steel, and paint it??? Supposedly the zinc is supposed to help prevent rust, when the paint, and primer gets chipped off by rocks??
