You can just go to the mill and get white oak rough cut to specifications. Out here there are no oaks and all you can get in the way of oak is red oak cabinetry wood at a the lumberyards. Red oak rots way too fast for anything exposed to the weather and even that is $3-$4 / bd ft for S2S (wany edges). The only white oak I have is from packing crates and pallets. Sometimes there's a board or two in a crate that's good enough to safe for making something out of.

Visited a friend in Delaware a long time ago and they were building a fence out of white oak. They just went to their local mill and got a bunch of rough boards. They were complaining about how hard they are to nail and how much they'd rather have cedar but it was way too expensive. Of course out here we have all the cedar you could want for $400/thousand. I'd trade 2000 ft of cedar for 1000 ft of white oak any day. Too bad they're 3000 miles apart.
