Tim,
You have a short/losewire/bad ground somewhere in the system. Time to get a continuity checker and go over everything.
This is not directed at you, but just a general observation, most flat plugs or u-haul type connectors are junk. Since 1984, when new Chrysler products leave the factory with a trailer package, they are equiped with a 7 pin, Bargman type plug, it lets you run the running lights, brakes, turn signals, trailer brakes, and a hot lead for accesories/charging system/winch, whatever. 99.9% of ALL new RV trailers etc. are wired this way, they will interchange with any other system. I cannot understand why more people do not use them. Every person here with a Ram and a factory package has that same system, if a buddy breaks down you can tow his trailer, loan him your trailer, etc. without messing with the wiring. The dang things (the 7 pin, 2" round Bargman plugs) are about $3.95 so being cheap is not an excuse.
Just an observation.
