There are 2 PTOs for the non-synchro (straight cut gear) transmission, the large gear and the small gear.
Drain the gear lube and remove the side plate on the drivers side. Use a straight edge and measure how much depth it would take to mesh with the large gear in the middle. (the PTO gear width = .8750", depth = .3750")
The gear 'stick out' from the mounting face of the PTO = 1.2500" for the deep PTO, approx 1.00" or less for the shallow (the second measurement is from memory).
I don't recall when the year change was. My '53 takes the deep PTO.
This can be double checked on the Power Wagon Forum PIF that Vaughn maintains, scan down and you will find PTO's listed.
