Any Ex Truck Drivers Here From The 50's??

I'm looking seriously at buying a real nice Mack truck for hauling my stuff around & the fellow that owns it is telling me the old Mack's didn't have front brakes...only rears!
I thought that sounded a little scary & he laughed & told me yes, they are scary in the wet when you don't have a trailer!
Is this only Mack or was this common?
