I was working in Alaskan arctic during the time after the disaster. I must say that it was widely publicized that Alaska was in the direct path of the radiation cloud. We were not able to drink any milk or eat any food produced in Alaska. Everything was shipped from the lower 48.
So I believe it depends upon your location as to how informed the government made you.
