Locking out the overdrive while towing or when pulling long, steep grades helps to keep the transmission cooler and to prevent slipping. That should prolong the life of the transmission considerably. I have a bunch of trouble free miles towing Power Wagons with my '87 Dodge CTD truck with the A727 automatic, which doesn't have overdrive. I just bought a new '03 Dodge CTD truck with the 48RE automatic with overdrive this winter, so I am trying to find out what can be done safely with it.
