I'm strictly talking about gas engines here.
A buddy of mine had '71 Chevy truck with a 250 inline 6. That engine was definitely worked a lot, towing trailers carrying horses, pigs or cows, and doing other general farm work. It lasted 200,000 miles.
Another friend of mine had an '81 Ford van with a 300 cid 6 cylinder, and he rebuilt the engine in it at 240,000 miles, even though it still ran well. The only reason he rebuilt it is because he was getting nervous about having such a high-mileage engine and driving it cross-coutry to amateur race car gatherings, towing his race car. He made such trips quite often.
I've heard many other such stories about these engines.
