This makes sense. Maybe in the earlier trucks they had not perfected the seal material and everything leaked out except grease. In 1968 I bought a new Ford 4x4 and the steering gear went out within about 20000 miles. It had been filled with grease at the factory. All the grease worked away from the gears and the gears fried.
