M-37 timing problem.

I rebuilt an M-37 engine about four years ago and converted everything to 12 volts. I had just recently purchased a rebuilt 12 volt distributor from Vintage and after several days of high frustration, I found out that on the top of the distributor cap the firing order starts on #2. I then took off the timing chain cover thinking the two dimpels on the crankshaft and camshaft gears were misalined. This happens not to be the case. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
