They are mostly built to high standards of quality. Some are a nightmare to work on from what I have heard. There is a degree of Snootyness in owning a JD in some circles. Kind of like Chevys: the only thing really wrong is a few of the people that own them!
JD has a line of cheaper lawn tractors to compete with Sears and such but the components are not as heavy duty.
I have a 1979 JD 300 and it is tough as a Dodge. The best thing is parts availability for the older ones. In stock or one day on order. Try that with a cheapo model from the grocery store!
Other name brands may even be better mowers but find a good dealer nearby for any of them.
