Wiring Relay

I'm tired of replacing alternators. I have a 76 W200, and a decent stereo, nothing crazy, no amps, sub's. But I was told that the stereo might be killing the alternators. How would I go about hooking up a relay to relieve some of the stress on the alternator?? I may be misunderstanding this concept completely. But could someone help me out... Rebuilt alternators are crap, and they're about $50 a piece and I'm going through about three a year... HELP!!
