You can tell if it's rings or valve by doing a dry test, and a wet test. Remove the spark plug and leave ignition off. Crank engine, and measure compression. Squirt some motor oil down the plug hole, and repeat. If the reading improves temporarily, it's a piston ring problem. If it's about the same in both cases, it's a valve. (Generally exhaust valve, and relatively easy to replace) apb
