a Amateur Radio License. You can run up to 1000 watts, use the ham radio repeaters in your area. Many repeaters are wide area coverage. For example my repeater on 2 meters (145.27mhz) KS2KRPT will provide coverage from Albany NY to Plattsburgh about 158 miles in a north/south corridor and very good coverage over into New Hampshire. Its worth the study/test to get a ham license.
