I ran into a lot of troubles when I ran a salvage yard with older vehicles like these. The engine number is also the VIN. If the engine number is for a different year than a '47, someone swapped another engine into the truck and didn't get the title changed. There is always the possiblity of a misprint at the license branch the last time the title was changed.
In Indiana, you would need to get a police check to verify the truck isn't stolen and then the state will issue a new title with the engine number on it as the VIN. I would imagine other states are similar.
The engine number will be on the drivers side of the block, near the front. It's on an embossed pad just below the head.
