I had sent a direct e-mail on this one as a follow-up. Anyway, take a straight edge to both flanges at the same time, measure the distance at the top and bottom of the straight edge to the other straight edge, rotate them 90 degrees and measure again. The distance must be equal at both ends and at the 90 degree ends as well. If one flange (sic: tranny output or Transfer input, Transfer output/axle flange) has a greater distance than the other end of the straight edge, something is not aligned. Someone may have dropped the wrong size engine/ transmission mount, shifted an axle, stuck something together in the wrong frame/bracket hole for the proper alignment between the two components, etc.
This is what the "jerry" rigged threaded rod corrected on the farmers truck, it simplified realigning the transfer to match the distances measured. I would have taken it a step further and welded the rod adjustment or replaced the torqued out part. Regards WAW
