I think that you'll see, over the next decade, a revolution in diesel technology. The amazing stuff coming out of Cummins right now is only the begining. They have near zero emission motors on the boards, little Jeep Liberty's will have a diesel option this year, most small cars in Europe already have diesels. Gas motors will always be around, for the conceivible future anyway, but because of fuel costs and emission rules, the zero polluting diesel is coming and coming quick.
Todds truck is unfortunately an exception, not the gas rule. Most 20+ mpg diesels are now the rule, not the exception, and they get better everyday! I talked to my bud with the new ISB Cummins last night. His 4x4 HD Ram Quad is getting 23 mpg and he does use it as a car. He traded in his V-10 for it and is saving so much that his house is filling up with money! ha!ha! His V-10 got around 16 mpg when new in '96 but was hovering around 10 mpg when he traded it in. Here's your math test.
He drives 20,000 miles a year. 20,000 miles at 10 mpg equals 2,000 gallons of gas. 20,000 miles at 23 mpg equals 870 gallons of diesel. A savings of 1,130 gallons per year. Yesterdays fuel price was $1.85 for gas here, diesel is $1.70, but forget about the difference, the 1,130 gallons of gas that he didn't buy was worth $2,090.50 PER YEAR! Diesel payoff time then is about 2.5 years. And he doesn't tow, haul or drill. It is simple economics, no matter what the use, Now if your use is heavy you will save even more.
BTW, I'll bring my Ram to Hollister this year and let you sit in it,...but after you and Jonas dress. ha!ha!ha!
