LA 318 in a 65 w300

The truck is a low mileage firetruck that seems to have the original engine. Why would a LA version of the 318 be in a 1965 vehicle. Everything i have read says the LA 318 was not introduced until 1967.Can anyone tell me whats going on? Thanks
