I recently had to get a tire changed on our 48 B-1-PW. It was the split ring type where the ring is bolted on with about 20 bolts. I went to several tire shops around the Lake Tahoe and Carson City area. I was given 101 excuses why it couldn't be done.
What I actually found out was that most the tire guys aren't old enough to really know about split rims. Most of them incorrectly identified them as "widow makers". When I dug into it, I found that widow makers are a two piece wheel where the two pieces snap fit together, each piece being half the wheel. Mine with the 20 bolts was very safe. I will confess that I have not seen the actual widow makers in person but can't understand how mine could be the least bit dangerous if installed properly, and just for good measure use a chicken hose to give you some distance. I think you need to be sure who your dealing with seems knowledgeable about old rigs.
