By the way, I looked in one of my 230 engine repair manuals, and it says the max acceptable chain slop is 3/4". That's with the top side of the chain tight, and with the bottom side of the chain slack.
Another note: Watching your oil pressure will often give you a good idea of whether or not your main bearing clearances are too large (i.e., low oil pressure can mean too much clearance...or it could just mean that your oil pump is worn, or your pressure relief spring is not doing its job right).
