Just reading an email will not infect your computer. These viruses propagate as attachments that you have to explicitly run. If you don't run any attachments, you'll be okay. Executable attachments have suffixes like .exe, .com, or .pif. That alone is suspicious. The viruses also have vague subject lines and text.
I think the confusion is about what is meant by "open". If "open" just means to read the email, it is fine. If "open" means to double-click on a file attached to the email, then it is dangerous.
