My truck has a 1.5yd box, and 1yd of crushed rock(2500lbs) is a fine load. The box/hoist assy raised the the trucks empty weight from 5250 to 6200 so there goes 1/2ton capacity right there. I'd think with a reinforced frame, overloads, and duals it still wouldn't like what a 3yd load could do to it. You'd have to use some restraint when using the box capacity or risk big problems.
