I tried this at 0130 one morning (don't ask it just worked out that way, less traffic). I had the opposite turn / drag sideways problem. To solve it you need to make all steering adjustments (turning) with the vehicles in motion. When moving the towed vehicle tracked fine. If I stopped at a stop sign and turned the wheel before I was moving forward the towed vehicle would go straight while I turned. At 0130 it became easy to swing wide, cut across the corner and roll through stops. Once I figured this all out it was <20mph nonstop for 23 miles. I had a helper steer the towed vehicle into the driveway due to the tight turn.
I was towing an m-56 without a rear drive shaft or third member in place. Front axle shafts were removed. The tow bar was attached to the front lifting shackles. I didn't plan it that way. I only had to get it rolling to the new house. New tenants at the old place were not keen on having an army truck on blocks in the front yard.
