Question, I have a 48B1 and need some advise.first the facts.. early spur gear tranny..np200 5.83/1 rear when driving, gears somewhere dont sound quite right. I know that these old gear boxes are noisy by design. while driving I get a kind of ringing gear grind (like a bad gear mesh) that comes and goes. I can be going along and it will seem to fade in like maybe a bad bearing and sometimes go away. sounds like teeth hitting pretty good.can feel it. I have quite a bundle into my resto and want it right. took tranny out spun by hand and it seems ok. pulled xfer case, spun by hand and seems to have a little free play between gear teeth (slap) Opened case at brake band shaft and gears apear real nice. I did notice that I have about 1/8 end play on pinion of rear diff. Looking for past experience on this,If noise was constant, or sounded solid and uniform, I would think it is just the nature of the beast, but sounds like bad gear mesh when it does it(pretty regular). The only experiance I have is with this truck, and have not had the chance to hear one of someone elses to judge by. I cannot seem to narrow the noise down to which gear box it is in for sure, but seemed that I am sitting on it. Wonderin if the diff could be doing it and sound is traveling up the drive line. Thanks in advance, John
