I believe that the law enforcement gentleman may be in error. The truck has a VIN, no? If anyone tries to register, title, or insure it, and its VIN were to be found on NCIC (National Crime Information Computer) as a stolen vehicle, the machinery would emit a loud burp, and prevent the person from doing so, and would raise a flag to local law enforcement to effect an arrest.

Of course, if the miscreants who stole your truck intend to part it out, or joy-ride across the desert, then your are SOL, but let's stay optimistic.

Do you have the truck listed in any way on your ranch's insurance policy? Was it ever registered to you or your company? Do you have the minumum paperwork necessary to register it now, in absentia, creating a new paper trail, which would allow the law enforcement gentleman to put the truck "into the system" as a stolen vehicle?

Do you have a title or expired registration document?

Most law enforcement people will take a stolen vehicle, registered or not, as a serious matter. I suspect that high-rollers who own vast collections of (unregistered) classic or rare autos would be able to convince the police to take a report.

Is the sheriff's office the authority having exclusive jurisdiction in your town? Perhaps you would get satisfaction by notifying your state police HQ. Failing that, if you suspect an interstate crime has taken place, your next call should be to the FBI. They may be a little reluctant to assist in so small a matter, but it's worth a try.

Please let us know, if possible, your vehicle's VIN, and we will all stay vigilant on your behalf. Perhaps Mr. Maney would be willing to list the info in a stolen vehicle box in the PWA. Also please notify Hemmings, who have a remarkable reputation for helping people in your unfortunate position. If you would like, I will post the VIN and description on the Military Vehicles forum, where a huge number of folks from all parts of the country, tune in every day.
