I sure wish the previous owner of my M37 had put 85w/140, 30wt, cod liver oil, bear grease, or any other slippery substance in my winch housing. When I opened the drain plug I got out a cup of bronze powder and water without a trace of oil, and that $200 gear is worn down to feather edges. For the little that a truck winch usually gets used, I don't see that it's absolutely necessary to use a proper worm gear lube such as you'd use in a piece of industrial machinery that runs constantly. Regular gear oil is good enough for me.
On the other hand, if you can only get the correct stuff in 5 gallon buckets from the jobber, it would be nice to bring it to a rally and sell quarts to other folks.
