I am eagerly anticipating the arrival of my '47 WDX come spring time. Meanwhile I have been buying parts for it, and making plans for it. Here is what I plan to do with it: As you can see in the photos, it has a non-origional box and was setup as a wrecker. The winch is still in the front of the bed. What I plan to do with it, is make a dump truck and winch truck out of it. I have a snow plow truck already, so I will pull the plow mount off it, and put a winch on front. I Will probably use the winch that is mounted in the back of the truck, and modify it to fit the front. For a dump bed, I have a 2 yard dump box settin on an old Ford that will work well.
I am looking to build a versatile small farm truck out of it. Eventually, I will refurbish it (notice I did NOT say Restore....There is a difference) I plan to repair the sheet metal, and make it a nice truck, but it will by no means be a show truck. I want to keep it as origional as I can.
How does a healty 230 six cyl stand up to going to 4.89 gears in these trucks? How would it work with a ton of dirt in the back? I'd like to go with the better road gears if I can, but then again, I'd like to keep the Lugging power as well. Also, what are reasonably price modifications that can be done to the ol 230 to make more power. I am not looking to build a Top Fueler Funny car engine, just something that would be a good work truck engine.
As for the winch, how easily can a stock type PW split front bumper be adapted to a different winch setup? the PTO will not be much of a problem, the truck has a PTO on it already, and I bought a PTO recently that has 2 output shafts on it, so I should be able to run PTO winch and dump without a problem.
How difficult is it to dual up the 9.00X16's on these trucks? I know you can dual them easier with the 7.50X16's Would I have to get special long studs or make spacers for them? Where can I get a brake lock like what A.P.B. was talking about? That would come in handy.
And last but not least, seeing I will have 3 PTO outlets, I will be able to run the winch, the dump box, and I will have another outlet. I would like to adapt a PTO-Belt Pulley unit off a Small Farmall Tractor. Any ideas on how this would work? Expecially with the dump box?
Thanks for the help guys!
