I'm off-grid and my solar stuff wimps out about this time of year. I run the generator a bit to keep the batteries charged, and I can run stuff in the shop at the same time.
dunno about running dsl exhaust into a ground pit...
I've played around with different mufflers (made one from a old hot-water heater I buried, wasn't too impressed with it). I tend to get a lot of crap building up in whatever muffler system I've got on my old Lister dsl, I wouldn't feel comfortable running it straight into the ground. I've kind of given up on quieting it down. If the damn thing would give up and die I'd buy something quieter. But it just keeps pounding away...
