As previously noted, the ballast resistors are usually big (for a resistor) ceramic goombahs say 1/2" sq cross section by 4" or so. Mount them so they can dissapate some heat. They start out (cold) passing full voltage to give a good hot spark then choke off the coil volyage to around 6 volts.
I just go into NAPA and ask for a ballast resistor and scowl when they ask for a p/n. Then one of the old guys just gives me one. This has worked for 30 years...
