Most of the time when I have trouble getting spark it's the points. I take a electrical tester (lighted probe type), and check the coil's + and - terminals while one of my kids turns the engine over. One terminal should stay steady indicating juice is going to the coil, the other once should go on and off distinctly. If not, the points aren't doing their job. I think steady on or only dimming slightly indicates the points are not opening enough, no light means the points are not making a connection when they close, or aren't closing. OK, I feel dumb now 'cause I can't remember for sure which one is is supposed to flash (the wire to the dist.)...I'm gonna say neg. But it doesn't really matter because you have to check both wires anyway.
