The older V8's I have seen just dumped to the atmosphere. The PCV I think allowed a better flow through the engine keeping the pressure down. Instead of dumping to atmosphere it went through the PCV valve and go reburned via the carb. If you are supposed to have one and its not there or not working you can have a nasty vacuum leak (to the point it wont even run) or build up pressure inside the engine which is a bad thing.
